Malignant (Demo, 2003)

Malignant is the first release ever issued under the name Devourer. Released on CD-R in 2003, the demo documents the project at its point of inception, before its identity had fully stabilized, but after its intent had already taken form.

The material was written and recorded between 2002 and 2003 by John Falk and Tommy Kvist. Malignant is the only Devourer release to feature Tommy as a contributing member, marking both a beginning and a divergence within the project’s history.

Following the demo’s release, John and Tommy continued to collaborate extensively outside of Devourer, performing and recording together in several other bands across adjacent extremes: Exosus (black metal, c. 2002) Radioskugga (grindcore, c. 2004–2007), Krypteia (black metal, c. 2007–2010), Fürakt (black metal, c. 2008-2009), Elit (black metal, c. 2009), and Panzerschreck (punk rock / metal, c. 2006–2011).

What survives of Malignant is fragmentary. The download consists solely of 128 kB/s MP3 files — degraded echoes of a recording whose original form no longer exists. The source recordings, the CD-R on which the demo circulated, along with its lyrics and original cover artwork, were lost years ago. The version presented here carries a newly created cover, shaped to resemble the original release as it once appeared, but it is an approximation rather than a recovery. The zip archive is ordered according to media-player hierarchies, to be extracted directly into your media platform’s library folder for proper recognition.
