Nastrand – Addicted to Death (EP, 2015)
Nastrand’s Addicted to Death EP was recorded in 2015 inside a Swedish LVM home—a locked, compulsory treatment facility for individuals with severe substance abuse and complex social and psychological struggles. John Falk was admitted there against his will, bringing with him little more than time, withdrawal, and an unresolved need to create.
The facility had a small music room, and John’s mother delivered his guitar to the home. The room was sparsely equipped: a Peavey 25-watt guitar amplifier, a black Pearl drum kit, a Shure SM58 vocal microphone, a cheap electric guitar he didn’t use, and a bass guitar of unknown make paired with a small bass combo amplifier, which he did use. A four-channel digital recorder and an old computer allowed him to record and mix music within these limited means. The drums were captured using only the vocal microphone, carefully positioned in the room, and without a click track, John used the second hand of the wall clock as a metronome. Each song was built methodically—drums first, then double-tracked guitars, bass, and vocals.
The lyrics are explicit and unfiltered, speaking of exhaustion, memory as torment, and a longing not for violence, but for silence—for rest. Nastrand stands as a raw document of confinement, dependency, and creation under surveillance. It is not a side project in spirit, but a record of endurance—music assembled in fragments of borrowed time, inside a system designed to prevent collapse, yet unable to touch what the songs themselves contain.
